A visit to My Sisters’ Place – London ON

May 10, 2019

In my Client Engagement role, I am very blessed that a portion of my career enables me the opportunity to meet with many extraordinary not-for-profit community pillars within the London and surrounding area. Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with Jennifer Martin, of My Sisters’ Place organization located in a historic home in the core of London, Ontario.

My Sisters’ Place is a safe, welcoming and inclusive center that supports women through drop-in and wrap-around services. This organization has an abundance of programs that are run daily, a few of which I was privileged enough to view and speak to some of the clients that are currently enrolled. From sewing to music classes, theater and knitting there is always something available to keep the minds of these women busy and off the devastating events that have occurred in their lives that have brought them thru the My Sisters’ Place door.

One program, in particular, is in the Coach House onsite at 566 Dundas Street and is called the Micro Enterprise. This program is in a fantastic building with loads of history which supports creativity and empowerment for women in need. This now operational store is home to thousands of beautifully hand-crafted pieces all designed by the clients onsite.

The Micro Enterprise launched to create a space within the My Sisters’ Place organization where women have access to creativity and resources including fabrics, jewels, mentorship, sisterhood, and a comfortable safe workspace.

When I asked a client in the shop what she liked most about the program she replied, “that I can create my own business and show my children to stay positive and anything is possible”. This client has just recently been reunited with her four children with whom she was separated from due to her personal struggles. She is now in a much better place, with a new rent to own home and her own business. It is stories that I witnessed like this one that makes me proud to acknowledge these local not-for-profit organizations that are true pillars in our community and who are making a difference in people’s lives.

Below is the program website link. If you are looking for a handcrafted beautifully designed Mother’s Day gift or a gift for someone special for any occasion I highly recommend popping in to see the ladies at the Micro Enterprise store.
